“Getting things done” is what our Literacy*AmeriCorps service members do in the Greater Dayton Area! This national service program mobilizes volunteers who take action, serving as literacy tutors/advocates in our community.
Our service members work with adults, children and families; in the workplace and in local schools, helping learners to meet their educational goals. The term of service is 1700 hours, and upon completion, members earn a $4725 education award. During a member’s service year, a living allowance, health care plan, and child care (if eligible) are provided. Moving expenses and housing are not provided.
L*AC service members receive full training as literacy tutors, in addition to on-going professional and personal development training, and numerous opportunities for community service.
Check us out and see if serving as L*AC is in your future!
Literacy*AmeriCorps Dayton Service Sites 2007-2008
All positions are a minimum of 38 hours per week (direct service) Monday-Friday. A few sites may have some weekend hours. Mandatory member meetings/trainings are held at least twice per month (min.2 hrs). Schedules at each site may vary, but all comprise over 80% of the direct service requirement. The additional 20% of members hours are spent in training, community service, outreach, volunteer recruitment, and unity activities. Members need a reliable form of transportation, should expect to work some weekends and evenings as needed (varies with each site), and be whole-heartedly committed to their term of service.

How to Join
Project READ has 10 positions for L*AC members each service year (September-August). We will begin recruiting for the 2008-2009 service year in March 2008. All of our positions are full time and serve for 11 months. Some part-time positions may be available for the coming service year. If you are interested in learning more about being an L*AC member, please follow the steps below. Please call the program coordinator (937) 512-3104 if you have any questions during the process.
Before you apply: Look over the position descriptions, member expectations, and service site descriptions to see if our program is right for you. If so, then go to www.americorps.gov and fill out the application. Please call our office for information re: the remaining open positions for the 08-09 service year ~ (937) 512-3104
Fill out the online application: The AmeriCorps application process is currently being updated. Go to http://www.americorps.org/ and click "Join AmeriCorps" and follow the directions. Our program is Literacy*AmeriCorps Dayton. Please call us if you have any trouble with the application process. You may also email your resume to the address listed below.
The Interview: The program coordinator will use the application to judge if the applicant is a good fit for the program, and if so, will make contact by phone or email. At first, a phone interview will take place, and then the applicant may be invited for an interview with the coordinator (about 30 minutes) Out of state applicants will have an extended phone interview. After the interview, qualified and interested applicants will be asked to choose at least three service sites that interest them. The coordinator will then give the applicants an information packet including contact numbers/email addresses for those sites. Applicants are responsible for arranging interviews with the site supervisors and their staff.
Site Interviews: Applicants should have their site interviews within 10 days of their interview with the program coordinator. Once the site interviews are completed, applicants and service site staff will give feedback to the coordinator. A placement decision will be made based on this feedback and the coordinator’s recommendation. Most of our service sites interview multiple candidates for their L*AC position(s).
Placement: Once a member is placed in a service position, they will be asked to fill out a pre- service commitment form and be given information about orientation and pre-service training. Then…it’s on to a year of getting things done and making a difference!
