Miami Valley READS (MVR) originated in the Dayton area as Project READ's
implementation of the statewide OhioReads initiative.
Miami Valley READS is now an
independent program of Project READ serving school-age (K-8), at-risk readers in
Montgomery, Greene, and Preble counties.

Operating out of the Project READ office, Miami Valley READS strives to assist elementary
through high school students in the implementation of their tutoring programs.  Miami Valley
READS helps to recruit, train, and recognize volunteers; garners assessment data from schools to
assess program effectiveness; and provides technical assistance to local programs.

Since 2000, the Miami Valley READS program has had 3,700 volunteer tutors.  Currently, over 66
local schools are participating in MVR, and over 100 businesses and community organizations are
providing volunteer tutors, in-kind resources, or financial contributions in support of the program.

The latest assessment results further indicate that tutored students showed significantly more
progress than their untutored counterparts.  The success of Miami Valley READS is due to the
hard work of the educators, volunteers, and corporate and community partners that work together
for the common good of students.

How can YOU HELP?  Many schools need additional reading tutors to work with
children.  Volunteers are needed during the school day or immediately after school.
It’s easy to
get involved.
Volunteers commit one hour per week to a child or group of children in one of the
66 schools or after-school programs in the MVR program.  Volunteers must attend a 1-3 hour
training session before they begin tutoring, and are generally asked to volunteer for one school
semester at a time (about 10 weeks).
